The idea behind HRUSKAA formed in 2009 when Melissa came across a black and white photo of a suspended pyramid structure called the Himmeli. At the time there was little on it's history or how it was made. Through her research, a Finnish-American Museum in Hancock, Michigan offered what information they could about the himmeli. From this and her pure determination, she began the journey of becoming a self taught Himmeli artisan.
MELISSA HRUSKAA - himmeli artist
With the aid of the basic materials of straw and string, the himmeli composition requires a mind of restrained creativity which results in a visually complex three dimensional kinetic sculpture. Traditionally made of rye, their look has been modernized with the use of colored straw. She continually experiments with different forms and was the first to introduce himmeli wall art.
Her efforts have paved the way for a resurgence in the legendary craft known by many nations across Northern Europe.
For me, each himmeli design reflects a blend of being thoughtful of it's history and my desire to still be original.
